INTERNAL SPACE PROJECT
The spaces we interact with reflect something about ourselves. A location can form and influence our mood and our identity. And recently with the Quarantine we were all forced to stay at home. Within our home we all have a favorite space or corner that we find comfort or enjoyment. For this assignment, students were asked to capture two photographs, one of a location or item that they that speaks to them at their home, and another of a self-portrait. Once they took the two photographs, they had to build a double exposure by juxtaposing the two images into one. In the photographs that we see here, students collide two images to portray a sense of their current reality.

As part of the Global Studies and STEAM initiative at Prep, we committed as a community to embrace the concept of Sustainability. As part of my shared passion, I had the idea of creating the iCan project. For this assignment, the students had to reuse and repurpose soda cans by exposing a photograph onto them. First, the students had to collect trash around campus and home to photograph them in the studio as a still life using a 35mm film. Once they shot and developed the film, they had to cut open and flatten the soda can so they could coat it with a light-sensitive photographic emulsion. The final step was to record the image onto the inside of the flattened can. In the end, students created beautiful and mysterious photos that are evidence of both our consumption and their commitment to creating a sustainable community.

In the past few years, the environment has gotten more attention from grassroots activist movements. The most focused on issues is global warming, but there are many more causes of climate change. One of the most dangerous is acid rain as it can kill plants, harm forest canopies, affect how drinkable water supplies are, and it is so strong it can burn through metals. In a 1984 Congressional report found acid rain caused the death of about 50,000 people in the US and Canadia. The main cause of acid rain is air pollution especially Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) which comes from emitting fossil fuels. A solution is to use more green energy. This video tries to portray the causes(top) and the effects (bottom) acid rain can have on the environment. If you want to find more information acid rain see the links below.

While we generally discuss the changes we would like to make to combat environmental issues like water pollution, we forget that we can easily be a part of the problem. My project aims to remind people of how the everyday plastic items pollute ocean waters and destroy ocean life for a variety of plants and animals. Additionally, with the use of black ink, I attempted to represent the immense damage that will leave a long-lasting impact on marine ecosystems. The black ink also makes the water cloudy and opaque, similar to the questionable future of our oceans every time we don’t make eco-friendly choices with reusable water bottles, biodegradable materials, and more.

In this video, I am attempting to evoke a drought feeling. The left side of the screen is dry compared to the right side of the screen which is plentiful and wet. Drought affects animals and plants to an extreme level, which is why I think it is such an important topic to dwell upon. Drought is especially meaningful to southern Californians because we have experienced drought and dryness in our everyday lives.
“Quarantine seems to have cultivated a sense of loneliness in our community. I believe art can change how we experience this crisis. For my video specifically, I hope people seeing how others around the city are dealing with their quarantine is a nice way to unify our community.”
Raising awareness is usually to incite action. This can very well be a good thing, but there are those who seek to profit off of your fear, guilt, and confusion. There are also non-profits that are almost entirely backed by industry that spread misinformation under false pretenses in a process known as astroturfing.
